It's a fine go-bag ration, and it carries one wrinkle worth knowing. Mainstay is now "a wholly owned brand of SOS Food Lab," no longer the Survivor Industries product older listings describe. That matters because the famous claims attached to this bar — Coast Guard approval, DoD specs, SOLAS — show up on older and retailer listings, while the current brand page lists only kosher certification. We're not repeating the marine and military approvals as fact until they're confirmed on current production. On taste and texture, independent reviewers are consistent: a lemon-shortbread note most found pleasant for a ration, but a dry, crumbly bar that several testers said eats more like packed sand than a snack. Other reviewers echoed it more gently — crumbly, gritty, a cornbread-like dryness — and one head-to-head found it a touch drier than the Datrex bars. Have water on hand when you eat it.
- The flavor is divisive. Most reviewers land on a lemon-shortbread or sugar-cookie note and call it pleasant for a ration.
